Midjourney made its name generating images from text. On June 18, 2026 it announced something far more physical: Midjourney Medical, a new division built around a novel imaging device the company calls 'Ultrasonic CT' — or simply, the full-body ultrasound. The pitch is striking: a whole-body scan that is in many ways comparable to an MRI, but takes as little as 60 seconds, with no ionizing radiation and no powerful magnetic fields — 'just sound and water.' The stated ambition is enormous: deploy roughly 50,000 scanners worldwide over six years and perform a billion full-body scans every month.
The mechanism is unusual. You step onto a platform inside a shallow pool of warm water, and the platform slowly lowers you — about five centimetres per second — through a ring packed with around half a million tiny elements, each about the size of a grain of sand. Every element can act as both a tiny speaker and a tiny microphone: the ring fires ultrasound through your body from every angle and listens to the echoes that bounce back, millions of times per second. Reconstructed, that becomes a 3D map of the body down to a fraction of a millimetre — visually reminiscent of an MRI, but at close to a hundred times the speed. The scanner is built on Butterfly Network's ultrasound-on-chip technology, with dozens of imaging modules per system.
The go-to-market is as unconventional as the hardware. The first location will be a flagship health spa in San Francisco — the 'Midjourney Spa' — opening at the end of 2027, complete with hot tubs, saunas, cold plunges and ten scanners under soft golden light. Rather than selling machines to hospitals and imaging centres, Midjourney is building a consumer-facing brand around preventive scanning. The company says it is self-funded with no investors and can pay for the first spa itself, and has begun conversations with the FDA.
It is worth staying clear-eyed. The 60-second scan is a goal — the current prototype reportedly takes around 20 minutes, because moving that volume of data fast enough is still hard, and only about a dozen people have been scanned so far by a small team. Midjourney plans to launch by offering 'body composition maps' rather than diagnoses, which can plausibly sit inside the FDA's general-wellness lane — the same space whole-body MRI services like Prenuvo and Ezra occupy. Every step toward actual diagnosis — detecting disease, naming a condition — would need separate clearance. The engineering demo is genuinely exciting; the clinical, regulatory and economic case is still mostly unproven.
We're watching this closely at Vivax, for one reason above the spa or even the scanner: the data. A fleet capturing repeated, longitudinal whole-body scans tied to how a person changes over time could, in the long run, be worth more than the hardware that produced it — and that is exactly the substrate grounded, world-model medical AI is built on. The gap between 'striking full-body images' and 'safe, reimbursable, diagnostic healthcare' is the whole game, and it is precisely where trustworthy clinical AI — models that understand the body, cite their reasoning, and know their limits — has to earn its place.
